Rock Hill is the largest city in York County and the fourth largest in South Carolina.   The city received its name for a flint hill of rock that was in the way when the Charlotte and South Carolina Railroad was building a rail line in the 1800s .   Workers removed the rock to make way for the railroad and a depot at the site which was first called Rocky Hill and finally became Rock Hill.  The city's history goes back to April 17, 1852, when the first Post Office opened here.  The town was officially incorporated in 1870.



Four unincorporated communities were annexed into the city:  Boyd Hill in the late 1940s, Ebenezer and Mexico in the 1960s, and Oakdale in the 1980s.



The city has received many awards and accolades including:  

America’s Promise - 100 Best Communities for Young People (2006, 2008)

BusinessWeek Magazine - Featured as the Best Place to Raise Kids in South Carolina (2009, 2010)
