City of York

York's history spans a period from its first settlement of the area by the Catawba Indians to the continued growth of this part of South Carolina.



Formerly known as Fergus's Cross Road, it later became Yorkville and then, finally, York.  York is the county seat of York County and has been since 1785 on land originally granted to John Miller in 1767.

The first white settlers came here in the early 1750's having migrated south from Pennsylvania and Virginia.  Of the immigrants who came to York County, many left their initial settlements in Pennsylvania and Virginia largely due to the lack of protection from Indians by the passive Quakers or continued religious differences.



The names of Lancaster, Chester and York had been brought from England to Pennsylvania, and then on to South Carolina by the early settlers.
